Tennis legend Serena Williams recently wrote a powerful open-letter to encourage “to all incredible women who strive for excellence” to rise above sexism in sports and beyond. Her words were published in the December issue of Porter magazine and for the Incredible Women of 2016 issue reprinted in the Guardian.

According to the Huffington Post, Williams opens up about wanting to be the best tennis player in the world—not just the best female one.

People call me one of the ‘world’s greatest female athletes.’ Do they say LeBron is one of the world’s best male athletes? Is Tiger? Federer? Why not? They are certainly not female.”

She also stressed how lucky she has been to have such a strong support system over the years.

I was fortunate to have a family that supported my dream and encouraged me to follow it,” she wrote. “I learned how important it is to fight for a dream and, most importantly, to dream big. My fight began when I was three and I haven’t taken a break since.

The 35-year-old also didn’t shy away from talking about how being Black and female has created roadblocks in her career but Williams stressed that she always rises above the hate to succeed.

As we know, women have to break down many barriers on the road to success,” she wrote. “One of those barriers is the way we are constantly reminded we are not men, as if it is a flaw.” But that never got in her way.”

She added: What others marked as flaws or disadvantages about myself – my race, my gender – I embraced as fuel for my success. I never let anything or anyone define me or my potential. I controlled my future.

Muhammad Ali Exhibit Receives $2.5 Million Donation From LeBron James

It’s always nice when celebrities make headlines for genuinely doing something positive and uplifting. The National Museum of African American History has a wonderful Muhammad Ali exhibit on display, however LeBron decided to make it even better courtesy of his multimillion dollar donation.

The newly opened National Museum of African American History has become the hottest place to visit in such a short period of time, with rave reviews coming from practically everyone who’s visited. The Muhammad Ali exhibit at the museum is one of the standouts and LeBron James was so moved by not only the exhibit itself, but what Ali means to the sports world as a whole, that he decided to generously donate a whopping $2.5 million to the exhibit. The Huffington Post has further details about the surprise donation, as well as James’ words on why he decided to do it.

Via Huffington Post:

LeBron James is donating $2.5 million to support a Muhammad Ali exhibit at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History in Washington, D.C., the basketball star and the museum announced on Thursday. The Cleveland Cavaliers forward said he was a longtime fan of Ali, one of the most beloved sports figures in history, who died on June 3 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s syndrome. “Every professional athlete, regardless of race and gender, owes a huge debt of gratitude to Muhammad Ali,” James said in a statement. “His legacy deserves to be studied and revered by every generation.”

The “Muhammad Ali: A Force for Change” exhibit features items from the late boxer, including a training robe worn at Dundee’s Fifth Street Gym in Miami. While the exhibit details Ali’s sports journey, it also highlights his community activism, spirituality and politics.

“We are extremely grateful to LeBron James,” said Damion Thomas, curator of the museum’s Sports Gallery. “As the most socially active superstar in sports today, LeBron James is a testament to the influence of Muhammad Ali (who) embodied the racial and social tumult of his times, blurring lines between politics and sports, activism and entertainment.”

In addition to the donation supporting the Ali exhibit, the funds will also be used for the museum itself. If you haven’t had a chance to visit, please put it on your list as soon as possible. The museum boasts 36,000 items and artifacts that trace the journey of African Americans dating back to the 1800s.

Three NBA Teams Announce They Will No Longer Stay At Trump Hotels

As the world continues to accept the realization that Donald Trump is the president-elect, the backlash of his win continues to grow with each passing day. From dozens of protests and social media uproar to harsh criticism from news outlets, Americans are definitely letting their voices be heard regarding Trump’s victory. The latest Trump backlash is from a trio of NBA teams who have officially announced that they will no longer stay at Trump Hotels during the basketball season.

In a recent statement, the Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks have all decided that they will no longer stay at any Donald Trump-branded hotels this season. This is a pretty bold move by the NBA and likely to garner both criticism and support from Trump supporters and detractors. ESPN has all the details regarding the teams’ decision, as well as the status of other NBA teams plans.

Via ESPN:

At least three NBA teams have stopped staying at Donald Trump-branded hotels this season in part to avoid any implied association with the new president-elect, according to league sources. Sources told ESPN.com that the Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks have moved away from Trump hotels in New York City and Chicago, which bear Donald Trump’s name through a licensing agreement. [In addition] another Eastern Conference team contracted to stay at the Trump SoHo in New York this season has likewise already decided to switch to a different property in Manhattan when its current contract expires at season’s end and that the Trump association is among the factors for the switch. Seven other teams told ESPN.com on Tuesday that they are still currently scheduled to stay at Trump-branded properties this season.

The Bucks stayed at the Trump International Tower and Hotel in Chicago on a preseason trip to play the Bulls in early October, but met with complications when they tried to make an 11th-hour cancellation. Milwaukee, sources say, has already made other arrangements for its regular-season road games against the Bulls.

The Grizzlies and Mavericks, have stayed at the Trump SoHo in the past but opted during the offseason to book new New York hotels for this season. Mavs owner Mark Cuban, speaking Wednesday, told the Associated Press that the decision was “made months ago. Not recently.” Grizzlies coach David Fizdale, speaking after the team’s shootaround Wednesday in Los Angeles, insisted that where Memphis stays or doesn’t stay is not politically motivated. “No truth to that,” Fizdale told the Memphis Commercial Appeal on Wednesday. “Our decisions as to what hotels we stay in ‎are made long before any of this election stuff took place. It’s no story‎.”

The report also goes on to state that the some NBA coaches and their players have felt uneasy since Trump’s election. Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy voiced his displeasure with Trump, saying “[he is] openly and brazenly racist and misogynistic and ethnocentric.”

Colin Kaepernick Starts Bay Area Youth Program With Plans For Expansion In Other Cities

Colin Kaepernick, unarguably one of 2016’s most “woke” celebrities, has added another platform to his activism. He is now forming a San Francisco youth program that is teaching local kids to know and exercise their rights.

The Huffington Post has further details on Kaepernick’s Bay Area youth program and the plans to take it across the country.

Via Huffington Post:

The San Fransisco 49ers quarterback hosted a free youth camp in Oakland on Saturday called Know Your Rights. The program aims to teach kids about various important issues, including higher education, self-empowerment and interacting with law enforcement. Hundreds of black and Latino children from the Bay Area attended, according to the New York Daily News. “We’re here today to fight back and give you all lessons to combat the oppressive issues that our people face on a daily basis. We’re here to give you tools to help you succeed,” he told the attendees, according to the Daily News. “We’re going to give you knowledge on policing history, what the systems of policing in America were based on, and we’re also going to teach you skills to make sure you always make it home safely.”

The camp staff, which consists of Kaepernick and a small group of volunteers, also highlighted 10 basic rights they believe each child should know they have, including the right to be free, healthy, safe and educated. The day was constructed around these rights, which were inspired by the 10-point plan created by the Black Panther Party.

Kaepernick sees this as reaching beyond San Francisco. According to Huffington Post, he said, “What we’ve done here today in Oakland, we want to do all over the country, in cities all over this country, by bringing together local leaders, local activists and local youth, and not only giving them the skills and lessons they need, but we want to show them how much we love and value them.”

Kaepernick is consistently proving that he doesn’t just talk about it, he is about it.

Shaun Assael’s New Book Proves That Boxing Legend Sonny Liston Was Murdered

shaunassaelcourtesy

Shaun Assael, Senior Writer, ESPN Magazine, and a member of ESPN’s Investigations Group is the author of The Murder Of Sonny Liston: Las Vegas, Heroin & Heavyweights. He talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about who he thinks killed the boxing hero and much more!

“I believe that the preponderance of evidence shows that he was murdered. I found out that there was a contract out on Sonny’s life from a local drug dealer that thought he ratted him out. That contract alone should’ve opened up an investigation. He was also in the middle of a drug sting. That would’ve been enough to do Sonny,” Assael said.

Colin Kaepernick Responds To Receiving Death Threats Due To Anthem Protest

Colin Kaepernick continues to stand up for what he believes in via his protest of the national anthem, a move that has garnered him a wealth of support and admiration. However, there have also been many who have voiced their opposition to his stance, but now things have gotten out of hand and perhaps Kaepernick should up his security.

During a recent press conference after a game, Colin Kaepernick spoke to the media about his national anthem protest where he dropped the bomb that he has received several death threats since everything started. The Grio has Kaepernick’s words about the death threats and how he chooses to deal with them.

Via The Grio:

On Tuesday, Kaepernick admitted to reporters that he had received the threats through a “couple of different avenues.” When reporters asked what he thought would happen if anyone tried to act on the threats, he replied, “It will be loud and clear for everyone why it happened, and that would move this movement forward at a greater speed than what it is even now.”

“There’s a lot of racism disguised as patriotism in this country. And people don’t like to address that. And they don’t like to address what the root of this protest is,” he continued.

Kaepernick also pointed to recent events like the death of Terence Crutcher as evidence of why he is protesting in the first place. “I find it very hard that people don’t understand what’s going on. I think the message has been out there loud and clear for quite some time now.”

Unfortunately there is no surprise that Kaepernick is receiving multiple death threats for expressing his views, as those who would go to such lengths are the very types of people that he is speaking of. We continue to stand with him.

Colin Kaepernick To Donate Massive Sales Of His Jersey Back Into The Community

Colin Kaepernick continues to make headlines for his determination to stand for his principles and make a difference. After his widely covered decision not to stand during the national anthem, Kaepernick was looked at as a hero to many, which is why it was of little surprise that his jersey became the number one best-seller in the country with massive sale totals. Now, instead of pocketing the huge profits from his jersey flying off shelves and selling out online, he has decided to do something good with the money.

According to the Huffington Post, Colin Kaepernick is receiving just as many accolades these days as he is criticism, as evidenced by his decision to donate 100% of the proceeds of his jersey sales back into the community. This comes on the heels of his announcement last week that he would donate his first $1 million made this season to organizations dedicated to causes that matter to him.

Via Huffington Post:

On Wednesday, one day after news surfaced that Kaepernick’s jersey had rocketed to No. 1 in the NFL, he took it one step further, saying he’ll donate all the money he receives from jersey sales to his cause.

“The only way I can repay you for the support is to return the favor by donating all the proceeds I receive from my jersey sales back into the communities!” Kaepernick wrote on Instagram. “I believe in the people, and WE can be the change!”

Just how sizable a donation those sales will become is hard to discern. While CNBC reported years ago that NFL players ― unlike NBA players ― receive a percentage of the money from their jersey sales, Adrian Peterson has pinned that number at around $10,000 for himself, and Richard Sherman has said he doesn’t receive any noticeable “kickback” when his jersey sales skyrocket.

Regardless of how much the actual donation of Kaepernick’s jersey sales turn out to be, the bigger issue is that he is committed to making a difference and is put his money where his mouth is…literally.

Cam Newton Causes Backlash After Proclaiming “We Are All The Same Color” In Interview

Another day, another black celebrity that has jumped on “all lives matter” train, this time it’s NFL player Cam Newton who has caused a social media uproar after an interview he did with ESPN was released. In the interview, Newton didn’t explicitly say that “all lives matter,” but he went a step further and proclaimed that “we are all the same color” when asked about current racial tensions in the country. As you can imagine, Twitter was on fire when the comments were released and as a result, Newton was the number one trending topic on the social media platform for most of the day.

While being interviewed about fellow NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s decision to not stand during the national anthem due to the treatment of black people in America, Cam Newton continued to add to his recent flubs about black people and race in America. He carefully avoided committing to a stance on Kaepernick’s choice, but instead of stopping there he decided to dig himself a verbal hole as he continued.

The Urban Daily via ESPN has all of the details about Newton’s controversial comments, as well as ESPN correspondent Stephen A. Smith’s response to Newton.

Via The Urban Daily:

In an interview with ESPN about Colin Kaepernick‘s decision to not stand during the national anthem, Newton decided not to choose a side, saying, “What I can’t fathom is how does 1/8 of an inch, something so small, be the difference in such a big commodity in our whole lifetime, and that’s the thickness of our skin.”

He added:

“And under that, we’re all the same color. And that’s the big picture. A lot of scrutiny happens when the athletes start talking about race, but the truth of the matter is we just gotta do right by each other. No matter what color you are. Certain things that has happened in our life, in our lifetime, is kind of embarrassing to be affiliated with, but it still happens. Who am I to say, Colin you’re wrong. And who am I to say, you’re right. We all have the right to think whatever we want to think.”

Watch the VIDEO clip of Stephen A. Smith’s response to Newton below:

Given the heated response to this situation, expect to see Cam Newton trending in the days to come. While it is certainly anyone’s prerogative to have their own opinion on an issue, it becomes problematic when your opinions appear to brush over the pain and heartache that many feel in regards to the disturbing topic of race in this country.

Olympic Commentator Makes Rude Comment About Simone Biles’ Parents, Apologizes

While the world is watching her already impressive and practically guaranteed gold medal-winning performance in Rio at the 2016 Olympic Games, powerhouse women’s gymnast Simone Biles is tuning out the noise and is laser-focused on giving it her best. However, the rude comments of an Olympic commentator prove that there will always be someone who attempts to rain on your parade with unnecessary and unwarranted opinions.

The Root has all the details of NBC commentator Al Trautwig’s insensitive comments regarding Simone Biles’ parents and the backlash he received when he continued to stand by his rude (and wrong) opinion on her biological parents.

Their report states:

On Sunday, Al Trautwig mentioned Ron and Nellie Biles as being gymnast Simone Biles’ grandparents rather than as her parents. Ron and Nellie Biles adopted Simone and her little sister Adria in 2001. The girls’ biological mother, Ron Biles’ daughter, struggled with drugs and alcohol, and the sisters had been in foster care for some time before the adoption was secured.

However, Trautwig retweeted Mingus’ tweet, while standing wrong and strong, saying, “They may be mom and dad but they are NOT her parents.” He then deleted the post, but of course it was too late, since viewers had already taken a screenshot of it. Following his inappropriate comment, the hashtag #FireTrautwig began trending on Twitter.

Trautwig later emailed NBC Sports, saying, “I regret that I wasn’t more clear in my wording on the air. I compounded the error on Twitter, which I quickly corrected. To set the record straight, Ron and Nellie are Simone’s parents.” Many people attacked Trautwig in reaction to his tweet, and NBC responded in a statement, “We became aware of the situation last night and addressed it with Al quickly.”

Meanwhile, Simone’s biological mother spoke with TMZ Sports and reiterated the fact that she has not only been clean and sober since 2007, but that she also has a good relationship with her superstar daughter. However, she did state that she was a bit upset about the way her father described her addition issues when he was recently interviewed by NBC, saying “he could have been more classy about it.”

Despite all of these irrelevant issues, we continue to wish Simone Biles the best in Rio and her quest to capture multiple Olympic gold medals. Go Simone and Go Team USA!

Former NBA Player Sean Rooks Dead At 46

Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach and former NBA player Sean Rooks died at the age of 46.

ESPN.com reports:

It is with deep sadness and overwhelming grief that we mourn the sudden loss of my son, Sean,” his mother, Deborah Brown, said in a statement released by the 76ers. “Our family asks that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this incredibly difficult time.”

Rooks collapsed and died while having dinner at a Philadelphia restaurant, sources told The Undefeated’s Marc Spears.

Earlier in the day, Rooks had visited with Knicks president Phil Jackson and general manager Steve Mills for an assistant coaching position on Jeff Hornacek’s staff. Rooks’ interview with the Knicks was first reported by The Vertical.

Rooks got into coaching in 2007 and had been with the 76ers organization since 2014, prior to his release a couple of weeks ago.

“Sean will long be remembered not for his accomplishments on the court — of which there were many — but for his vibrant personality, positive outlook and the genuine care he had for everyone in his life,” the 76ers said in a statement.

Werk! Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad Gives FLOTUS Special Fencing Lesson

From inspiring potential college students to giving speeches to Olympic hopefuls, First Lady Michelle Obama has been killing it in New York City the past week. Her newest move? Getting an amazing fencing lesson from Muslim-American Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad 100 days before the Rio Summer Games.

According to The Associated Press, in Times Square on Wednesday as part of event promoting a new sports initiative encouraging young people to play Olympic Sports, Muhammad hugged FLOTUS be giving her and other young girls practicing with foam foils.

https://twitter.com/Nadiaalie/status/726256323273191424

Muhammad has been making history as of late, being the first competitor in U.S. Olympic history to wear her hijab during competition. She spoke to press after the event about how the current election cycle has upped anti-Muslim sentiment in our country.

“It’s unfortunate that we’re in this moment, especially during the presidential election, where people feel so comfortable voicing their dislike or the discontent for people of a particular background, a particular race or a particular religion,” she said. “We as Americans have to fight that, because that goes against the very values that we stand for.”

Before her fencing lesson, Mrs. Obama addressed the crowd, referring to herself as a “real, lifelong, die-hard Olympics fan” and reminisced about growing up on Chicago’s South Side, where the kids would crowd around one neighbor’s TV and “watch for hours,” The AP noted.  “Once the games were over, we would all run outside and set up some makeshift hurdle or some balance beam, and we’d try to imitate our heroes,” Mrs. Obama said.

Man, we are going to miss Michelle and the rest of the Obama family in the White House.

Jackie Robinson Day: New PBS Doc Highlights Facts We Never Knew About The Baseball Great

1952 World Series - Game 1: New York Yankees v Brooklyn Dodgers

MLB legend Jackie Robinson has long been the topic of book reports and school presentations for generations of students since the 1950s. But thanks to a new documentary about the baseball great on PBS, simply called Jackie Robinson, viewers are getting a chance to learn even more about one of the biggest sports icons in American history.

The first and best of his class, Jackie was not only an extraordinary athlete, but he was also very vocal about politics, and was instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement.

On April 15, 1947, Jackie stepped onto first base at Brooklyn Dodgers stadium, becoming the first African-American to shatter the color barrier of baseball. As the nation celebrates Jackie Robinson Day, here are some interesting details about one of the most famous men of the outfield.

Jackie Robinson’s family members were also pioneers.

In 1919, Jackie Robinson was born to a family of sharecroppers in Cairo, Ga. When his father left the family six months after his birth, they moved to Pasadena, California, where they owned a home in a residential neighborhood – the only African-Americans in the well-to-do city. Although the family – led by Jackie’s mother, who worked a host of jobs to care for her family – faced insurmountable racism and was threatened with fires and cross burnings, Jackie and his siblings enjoyed a stable life.

His brother Mack Robinson won a silver medal in the 1936 Olympics, coming in behind Jesse Owens.

Much of the 1936 Olympics focused on runner Jesse Owens’ historic gold medal win in the 200-meter dash. But it was Jackie’s brother, Mack, who took the silver. However, life for the Olympian was nothing like what we know in modern times. There were no endorsements or high-profile positions waiting for Mack in the States. Instead, he worked as a street sweeper when he returned home. The proud athlete wore his Olympic Team jacket as he swept.

His wife Rachel Robinson called off their engagement to achieve her own goals.

#BlackGirlMagic is a shining new era for African-American millennials, but women like Rachel Robinson set the standard. Mrs. Robinson was determined to pursue her career as a nurse. She graduated from UCLA in 1945 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and received her masters from New York University in 1956. Jackie wasn’t always supportive of her goals to become a registered nurse. During that time, she returned his engagement ring and told him she would not give up her dreams. The two did marry in 1946, and since then? Mrs. Robinson became an Assistant Professor at Yale University, and the Director of Nursing at Connecticut Mental Health Center.

Jackie Robinson Addresses Congress

Jackie Robinson was the first African-American with a syndicated column in the New York Post.

Talk about groundbreaking. After he retired from baseball, Jackie was vocal about his political views. Taking notice of his influence, the NY Post offered Jackie a recurring column during the Kennedy-Nixon presidential election in 1960. Initially, Jackie was a staunch supporter of Richard Nixon, but he later praised John F. Kennedy for his stance on change during the Civil Rights Movement.

The Robinson family lived in Queens among other greats of the era.

St. Albans, Queens is known as one of the birthplaces of hip-hop, but before that time, the residential area was home to the most affluent figures of the 1950s. Jackie Robinson’s family resided in St. Albans for years. Their neighbors included Count Basie, Lena Horne…and even The Great Bambino, Babe Ruth.

Carly Simon and Jackie Robinson’s families were very close.

A total mind-blowing moment of the documentary was the amazing friendship between Carly Simon and Jackie’s families. Her family, who also founded Simon & Schuster, helped the Robinsons move to Stamford, Conn., where they were shunned simply because they were African-American. As a young girl, Simon would attend Dodgers games, and Jackie called her his “lucky charm.”
