After a three day journey on foot from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia, Mike D’angelo was at the Quincy Harris Morning Show with K. Foxx by 7am to share his story with the city of Philadelphia.

With his flag and t-shirt on honoring his 10-year-old niece Makiyah Wilson, Mike explained his reasoning for taking the journey and what he hopes to accomplish. He talked about how he had to walk extra miles because it was to unsafe to walk on the highways, the people he encountered on his journey, and the physical toll it took on his body, but that it’s “what God told him he needed to do.”

He also shared that he will be flying out to California to walk to the Golden Gate bridge to Oakland in honor of Nia Wilson, as well as his relationship he has with one of Philadelphia’s most inspiring figures @Wallo267.

Towards the end of the interview, Quincy even offers him a gift card to a massage & treatment establishment that he had in his wallet, but Mike kindly declined, and asked him to donate it to a mother out in the area that deserves it more.

Mike told us he lives by the motto to “Be Legendary” everyday, and even through these trying times, he’s using it as his mission to spread awareness around the country.

“So many kids lost their life in the district and i feel like now is the time that somebody step up and just try to make a stand, do something legendary that people remember no matter what you can think twice about squeezing that trigger.”

We commend you Mike, and will keep all our listeners updated on his next journey. #WalkForMakiyah

Samaria Rice tells Karen about her role within the movie, as well as where she draws her daily strength from. She explains the importance of keeping is name alive, which is the reason behind the new community center in Cleveland, Ohio. She wants the center to be a place for after school programming, mentorship, and a place for arts and creatives to learn and grow.

“We want to tell our youth the truth,” says Rice, “We need some accountability in this country.

Learn More About The Upcoming Film Below:

Jason’s Letter is a powerful film addressing the unarmed police shooting in America through the eye’s of two young boys; one boy who had to lose his life in order for the conversation of change to even be considered and another young boy who was brave enough to tell the horrific story of his classmates death and offers a solution. (This Film is based on an actual letter from a 12 year old boy, following the murder of Michael Brown.)

The film is set in Hadden Heights, a small town encompassed largely by minorities, similar to small towns in the US. Let it be noted the police force is 90% white with 81% percent of all officers being hired from outside the county. Over the years, Hadden Heights has seen a rise in the fatal shootings of its unarmed Black and Latino men. This small town of 20,000 residents has made National Headlines far too many times as a result of the unprecedented shootings of its community members.

Actress Claudia Jordan, plays the role of Maddie, a mother of a murdered unarmed 12 year old boy named Troy James.

“Its a blessing to have the parents of these young boys present at the screening, playing this role only gave me a glimpse of the pain and turmoil they went through. I only pray this film sheds light on this topic and opens the eyes of those who choose to be blind.” (Claudia Jordan)

Twelve year old, Jason McKey, played by newcomer actor Jamol Manigualt of Philadelphia, is still grieving from the recent loss of his best friend Troy James Jr.  After realizing the marches and protest have done nothing to stop these killings, Jason decides to take matters into his own hands. Transforming a school project into a petition letter, Jason elicits help from his Uncle Tony and family friend, Sammi Brooks , played by Vivica A Fox, to petition the city council for reform… You have to watch this film to know what this brave young boy comes up with as a solution.

Local History Makers: Karen Vaughn Sits Down With Her Uncle, Martin Vaughn, The 1st African American Quarterback At University Of Penn

Video

Karen Vaughn sits down with her uncle Martin Vaughn for this weeks feature of LOCAL HISTORY MAKERS for our Black History Month series. They talk about his local history, family, values learned from football, and some beneficial financial tips!

Watch the full interview above!

Karen & Martin Vaughn

Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Steve McNair. These NFL stars of today are gaining recognition for being great quarterbacks. They are not great black quarterbacks but just great quarterbacks. Period.

But in the late 1960s and early 1970s the very term “black quarterback” was fairly new. The reason? It might have been that many were denied the opportunity to play quarterback growing up. It could have been the lingering effects of prejudices that the Civil Rights Movement had hoped to abolish. Regardless, not too many collegiate quarterbacks were men of color, yet several Ivy League student-athletes were on a course to change that.

The Ivies boasted four starting African-American quarterbacks between the years of 1969 and 1974 — Rod Plummer of Princeton, Rob Foster of Harvard, Marty Vaughn of Penn, and Dennis Coleman of Brown. Additionally, two others, Bob Dubose of Columbia, and Barrett Rosser from Cornell, saw time behind center for their respective squads. Although this occurred at a time when each season saw the number of black quarterbacks in the Division I ranks hover around single digits, all the players agree that the changing climate in the Unites States at this time created an unprecedented situation for each of them.
