The Other America: Dr. Martin Luther King Annual Tribute at National Cathedral [Livestream]

In 1967 at Stanford University, Dr. King described an America with “a daily ugliness … that transforms the ebullience of hope into the fatigue of despair.” His words remind us that this “other America” still exists for too many today. Join special guest Ms. Cathy Hughes, Founder, and Chairperson of Urban One, the largest African-American owned and operated broadcasting company in the nation, for this annual event.

Dr. King’s words will be amplified by musical performances from Howard University Choir, Children of the Gospel, and the Cathedral Band and dance by Andile Ndlovu of the Washington Ballet. With participation and sponsorship from Advancement Project, a next-generation, multi-racial civil rights organization, we will shine a light on all Americans, and cling to the faith that, as King says, will “speed up the day when all of God’s children … will be able to join hands and live together all over this great nation.”

Vince McMahon Reportedly Bringing Back The XFL

Array

A couple of weeks ago World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon sold a whopping 3.34 million shares in his company for approximately $100 million to help fund his new company Alpha Entertainment. Many speculated if the Wrestling magnate would be getting out of the business completely retiring. Others wondered if he would move into another arena and today we may find out.

It has been reported that mcMahon will be restarting the famed XFL Football League in hopes of a 2020 season. If you may remember in 2001, McMahon started the XFL. The League kicked off to a fast start but quickly floundered and lasted only one season. However, a lot of new media techniques such as camera angles and the look and feel of the game changed after the unsuccessful league folded. With the NFL going through ratings issues and the Colin Kaepernick situation, this may be time for some competition.

This go-around according to Pro Wrestling Insider McMahon wants to focus on building rosters and finding coaches before progressing too far with plans for the new XFL. In 2017, ESPN released a documentary on the leagued entitled “This Is The XFL” for their 30 For 30 series.

Alpha Entertainment may offer more content and programming but for now, watch the 3pm press conference on Alphaentllc.com

Getting Easter Bunny Hope With Comedian Robert Powell

[anvplayer video=”4319515″]
Some comedians held odd jobs or had different careers before falling into comedy. However, what comedian do you know has a master’s degree in Political Science? The jokes definitely have to be pouring out of them at that point. Well, that would be Robert Powell.

Skip asked if he could have worked on the Trump campaign and even in his administration but Powell met it with a hard no.

“No, goodness no no no no, Trump doesn’t need me he does enough hope selling on his own. Donald Trump came to Texas and said we going to get rid of all the Mexicans,” explained Powell. “Do you know what kind of hope you got to have to believe in all that? That’s like Easter bunny type hope.”

He continued, “They couldn’t catch El Chapo and he escaped on tape. They weren’t even smart enough to go to the other end of the tunnel and wait for him to get out there like I just don’t know where he could have went.”

Catch Robert Powell at the Arlington Improv on December 22-23.

[anvplayer video=”4319516″]
Can you think of one comedian that lost to a 10-year-old on America’s Got Talent and isn’t salty about it? No right? Comedian Preacher Lawson is that comedian that lost to a 10-year-old and is a bit salty about it.

No worries, he’s been getting some traction and laughs about it now. He’s a huge fan of Lavell Crawford and could hardly contain himself while talking to him.

“I’m trying not to flip out if I’m being honest. The whole time I’m like, ‘yah yah Lavell,’ this is so crazy,” expressed Lawson.

On stage, Lawson has a ton of energy which is great for a comedian. “I just love moving on stage. I remember when I was a kid they tried to put me on medication,” explained Lawson. “My mom was like, ‘nah he’ll grow out of it,’ she was wrong.”

Preacher Lawson will be at the Addison Improv December 22-23 so if you’re in town try and catch his show!

Little Known Black History Fact: Jerry Pinkney

Jerry Pinkney, a children’s book author and illustrator, has been internationally recognized for his contribution to the arts. Today is the Philadelphia native’s birthday, and we’re taking a look back at his highly decorated career.

Pinkney was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia in 1939. As a boy, Pinkney suffered from dyslexia and was withdrawn but found an outlet via art. Through the urging of teachers and notable cartoonist John Liney, Pinkney dove into the craft even further. He entered the Philadelphia Museum College of Art (now University of the Arts) where he met his wife, Gloria.

After working several odd jobs as a designer and illustrator, he began penning children’s books in 1964. Among his early successes was being commissioned to provide art for the first nine U.S. Post Office Black Heritage stamps featuring the likenesses of Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Benjamin Banneker, Jackie Robinson, Whitney Young, Scott Joplin, Carter Woodson, Mary McLeod Bethune and Sojourner Truth.

In 2010, Pinkney won the Caldecott Medal for his wordless rendition of “Aesop’s Fable” titled “The Lion & The Mouse.” The award is the highest American honor for a children’s picture book. In 2016, he won the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award, which acknowledges the achievements of Black children’s book authors and illustrators.

In 1998, Pinkney was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which is the highest international recognition for children’s book creators. He’s also been an art professor at the University of Delaware, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and State University of New York at Buffalo.

Little Known Black History Fact: Mamie Johnson

Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, the last living of the trio of women who played in the Negro Leagues, has died. The pitcher was a teammate of the pioneering Hank Aaron and amassed a respectable 33-8 record in her three seasons of play.

Johnson was born September 27, 1935 in the small town of Ridgeway, South Carolina. As a young girl, she spent time pitching with her uncle instead of working in the crop fields. At the age of 17, the gunslinger attempted to try out for an all-white professional, all-female team but was rejected.

The Negro Leagues’ Indianapolis Crows gave Johnson a shot at pitcher in 1953 and it paid off handsomely for the team. Not only was she an effective pitcher, schooled by the great Satchel Paige, she also hit at .270 at the plate. She got the nickname “Peanut” from Kansas City Monarchs third baseman, Hank Bayliss, who remarked that at five-foot-three, Johnson was as small as a peanut.

In the off-season, Johnson attended New York University and earned a nursing degree from North Carolina A&T University before going on to a 30-year career in nursing and raising her son, Charles. She has been honored several times, including being drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2008 in an honorific ceremony.

Johnson was 82.
