Watch: Karen Vaughn discusses how we can get to a SmokeFreePhilly

[anvplayer video=”4408657″]

Ryan Coffman (Tobacco Policy and Control Program Manager) from SmokeFreePhilly.org was live with Karen Vaughn on 100.3 WRNB discussing the dangers in flavored tobacco and the hearing happening June 5th @ City Hall in Philadelphia! This is VERY important for the community, youth, and parents to understand!

“The public hearing on the flavored tobacco legislation will be held on Tuesday, 6/5/18, at 1pm in Council Chambers on the 4th floor of City Hall.  Due to other bills being heard, the hearing may not start precisely at 1pm. Please feel free to share this important hearing with your partners and networks.  Thank you so much for your commitment to addressing flavored tobacco and its impact on youth in Philadelphia.

Also, we wanted to share another piece of tobacco legislation that was introduced in City Council recently. If passed, this legislation would remove the provision prohibiting the ability of tobacco retailers to transfer their tobacco permit to the new business owner. This would delay, potentially by decades, the decline in tobacco retailers in the city and increase the number of retailers selling tobacco near schools, in communities of color and in low-income communities.”

Workshop For Black Teen Girls On Healthy Relationships

What is SIHLE

Source: Tiffany Bacon / Tiffany Bacon

Let’s be honest, when it comes to healthy relationships we don’t always have great examples filtering through our social media. Our youth, as well as many adults, live in the cyber social world. We are influenced by what we hear and see. There’s always a video or meme about how crazy/unattractive-too attractive/too independent/crazy women are and how dead beat/ dumb/ crazy/ abusive/ lazy/abusive men are. In “real life” many of us are not experiencing healthy relationships either. There is a local program that helps our teen girls understands the components of a healthy relationship, warning signs for abuse and making better life choices.

The Philadelphia SIHLE (Sisters Informing Healing Living and Empowering) Project is a program of Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC). This is a healthy lifestyles workshop for black teen girls ages 14 to 18. We focus on reducing HIV sexual risk behaviors, improving personal communication, identifying & maintaining healthy relationships and promoting gender & ethnic pride. This is a 4 day workshop that meets for 3 hours each day. We also offer special weekend workshops where the girls will attend our 6 hour sessions on a Saturday and a Sunday. They will complete the 12 hour program in one weekend.

Our girls will receive, upon graduation, a Visa gift card and 12 hours of community service credits. We host SIHLE sessions all over Philadelphia. We cannot, however, service Delaware or New Jersey this time. Our next workshop will take place on Saturday August 19 & Sunday August 20, 2017 at PHMC, Centre Square East, 1500 Market Street, Phila, Pa 19102. The workshops will meet at 11am. You can register a young lady for SIHLE or to inquire about hosting a SIHLE cycle at your school or organization CLICK HERE.

Attention all youth and adults! There are a few great healthy lifestyle & leadership programs available in Philadelphia.  There are several reasons to participate in these activities. First of all, these programs are free of charge.  They all provide food and monetary incentives for participation. Secondly, these programs are a part of Real Rap Philly an initiative from Public Health management Corporation. Finally, these programs give parents the chance to learn how to discuss hard topics with their kids. The youth also learn how to improve their leadership skills while building healthy lifestyle habits. We are currently recruiting participants for several programs. Check out the program descriptions below:

What is Real Rap Philly?

Real Rap Philly (RRP) is a campaign by the Philadelphia Area Sexual Health Initiative at Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC). Real Rap Philly targets youth ages 12 to 24 in the Greater Philadelphia area to get “real” about their sexual health. RRP empowers youth to talk with their partners, parents and peers. Through Real Rap Philly, youth can also find information on youth-friendly STI testing sites, locations offering free condoms, clinical resources, facts about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and teen pregnancy prevention (TPP). Teens can also find programs and events going on in Philadelphia that allow real conversations – “real rap” – about sex. Philadelphia has some of the highest STI infection rates and teen pregnancy rates in the nation, affecting youth ages 12 to 24.

The adult programs also give parents a chance to learn what the youth learn. The healthy lifestyle & leadership programs are available throughout Philly. In addition to travelling around the city, we hold classes at our main office at 1500 Market Street. Some classes will begin at the end of April and some will begin in May. If you would like to sign up for any of our classes CLICK HERE.

The Philadelphia Zoo’s gorilla exhibit just got a little bigger and a whole lot cuter.

Visitors can see the newborn in the zoo’s Primate Reserve. The newborn’s gender isn’t known yet because the mother has been carrying the baby too closely for zoo staff to determine its sex.

The newborn is the first baby gorilla born at the zoo in about 20 years.

Medical Providers To Merge With Uber

For people without access to private transportation, getting to medical appointments can be a challenge, especially if they have chronic conditions that require frequent appointments.

Partnerships between ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft and hospitals are emerging around the country making the trips easier and, in some cases, it is even covered by Medicaid and other insurance plans.

While the efforts are still small, some local hospitals and medical transportation providers think the potential for growth is large.
