Pennsylvania State Police along with Philadelphia police are investigating the fatal shooting of a motorist overnight on the Schuylkill Expressway.
The crime happened just before 3:00am Sunday morning in the eastbound lanes near the Montgomery Drive exit.
Police say the incident occurred when the suspects, operating an unknown vehicle, drove beside the 29-year-old victim’s vehicle and shot numerous bullets into the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
Pennsylvania State Police say the victim, who has been identified as Kareem El, was shot at least one time in the head.
Police say El was the driver of the car and was carrying at least one passenger.
Officials say the car continued to travel on the Schuylkill Expressway for sometime after he was hit before crashing into the center median.
A passing Philadelphia Police officer was flagged down by a passenger in the car.
Medics arrived a short time later and pronounced the victim dead inside.
The investigation shutdown the Schuylkill Expressway at Route 1 for several hours early Sunday morning due to the shooting.
State Police say it doesn’t appear that road rage played a role in the shooting, and it appears the victim was targeted.
The Schuylkill Expressway has cameras operated by PennDOT, but officials say they are not recorded.
State police are now investigating the victim’s past to try and figure out who may have wanted him dead.
